Bermuda, The Caribbean

I mean hey if it's good enough for those people who make those shorts than it surely should be good enough for you! The golfing here is past excellent, that along with the beautiful beaches have made this island a hot spot for the Brits for the past long time now.

Madives, Indian Ocean

Although being strictly Islamic with all of the tourist limitations that imposes, the Maldives are nonetheless a tourist's paradise. Unspoiled beaches, & the bragging rights of having been able to go to a country which nearly all people could not point out on a world map.

Phuket, Thailand

People talk about Mexico having nice beaches, but to that I question, yeah but can you ride an elephant down them? Well here in Phuket you can, & let me tell you an elephant ride down one of the world's more beautiful beaches is truly a unique experience. That and the island has 10,000 bar girls.

Malta Island, Malta

7,000 years of fascinating history, & the sparkling Mediterranean, equals perfection. Malta is pure beauty, the scenery, the beaches, the cities, everything here is grand.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is arguably the best place in the world to watch the sunset. And definitely a beautiful island on which to vacation on. Little towns line the edge of the island's cliffs which make up the upper caldera of an ancient volcano. Also the island has black sand beaches, & red sand beaches, basically any colour of sand that you want.

Iceland, Europe

Okay maybe it's not fitting in with the whole tropical island theme, but Iceland is truly amazing. The scenery as well as the beauty of the people make this island worth vacationing on a thousand times over.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

The name Bora Bora instantly brings one's mind to conjure up vibrant images of beaches, & mountains, & well topless natives. The natives however aren't topless anymore, but everything else you've ever imagined is still there. This isn't one of the world's most popular honeymoon destinations for no reason.

Sicily, Italy

The city of Taormina alone is enough to justify Sicily's position. A city built upon a mountaintop overlooking some of Europe's more beautiful beaches just kilometres from the filming location of the godfather. Well all of those things add up to pure amazement.

Fraser Island, Australia

Tourists flock to Fraser Island to enjoy the natural beauty it offers, not necessarily its luxuries. Rental 4WD vehicles are available for visitors to explore the exotic rainforests where Australia's wild dogs, dingoes, can be seen roaming around. Whale watching is another popular activity and whales can be commonly seen from the Indian Head Point cliffs in the north of the island.

Big Island, Hawaii

Black sand beaches, waterfalls, a rainforest, & a continuously erupting volcano! Who doesn't want to vacation here?!

Islands may be classified as either continental or oceanic. Oceanic islands are those that rise to the surface from the floors of the ocean basins. Continental islands are simply unsubmerged parts of the continental shelf that are entirely surrounded by water. Many of the larger islands of the world are of the continental type. Greenland (840,000 square miles [2,175,000 square km]), the largest island, is composed of the same materials as the adjacent North American continent, from which it is separated by a shallow and narrow sea. Likewise the world's second largest island, New Guinea (309,000 square miles [800,000 square km]), is part of the Australian continental platform and is separated from it only by the very shallow and narrow Torres Strait. A slight warping of the sea bottom in the vicinity of Torres Strait would be sufficient to join New Guinea to Australia; conversely, a slight rise in sea level may submerge a hilly coast and leave the hilltops remaining as small islands just off shore (such are those off the coast near Boston, Mass., and the islands off the Maine coast).

Atoll, ring-shaped coral reef surrounding a lakelike body of water, known as a lagoon. Atolls are found in tropical and subtropical seas, especially in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Believed to form on the flanks of an underwater volcano, an atoll may project above the surface of the water either as a single island or as a chain of islets. Ordinarily the island or islets rise 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) above sea level. Most of the reef lies just below the surface of the water and is often exposed by waves and tides. The lagoon is quite deep, generally 20 to 30 m (60 to 100 ft) and up to 90 m (300 ft) deep. The word atoll comes from the Divehi language, which is spoken in the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean.

Any area of land smaller than a continent and entirely surrounded by water. Islands may occur in oceans, seas, lakes, or rivers. A group of islands is called an archipelago. Bora Bora to the Caribbean, Tahiti to Hawaii, an online guide to islands of the world.
